Electric BMW 1602 opened 1972 Olympic Games

In the run up to the London 2012 Games, which the German carmaker is sponsoring, BMW is reminding us that it’s been working on electric cars for years.
A short video features the 1972 BMW 1602 they converted to electric power especially for the Munich Olympics opening ceremony. Back then the biggest concern was whether or not the electric 1602 could manage a driving range of 26 miles – the same distance as a marathon. Things have come a fair way since then.
The video also shows the funny little 1991 E1 concept and a very rudimentary-looking go-kart-style prototype before bringing the story bang up-to-date with BMW ActiveE test car, which we drove in both Germany and the UK last year.
